Jett key to Victory - Partners with Socci to capture 2013 Memorial!
Due
to the over working of some of the beat writers covering other events, like the NYC Amateur, The Greek Open, The Tiger-Sergio
spat, and the Belmont Stakes, press releases were at a stand still. This is a 2 week Esqwire, I apologize for those that love
to read your name in lights, or just enjoy the wire. This disclaimer has been brought to you by the Steve Schwab Jr 2013 Presidential
Campaign.
On June 1, The Squires held their Annual Memorial Tournament, which brought out 55 players. It was great to
see some old faces, which included Charlie Hasselgren, Vinny Coppola Jr & Sr, Eric Carlson, Vinny Fraumeni, and Jack Kinlock.
It was also great to see Terry Cioffi play. Hopefully he has been an inspiration to many. Paul Demario, who did not join this
year due to work obligations, reached out to us saying, he would never miss this day. That's what this day represents. A moment
of silence kicked off the event, tributing those members that passed along the way. We lost 2 good members in the past year.
Pete Donlan and Vinny Nichilo. Their signs were traditionally placed on the 1st tee. Thanks to Joe Jett and Vin Innocente
for placing all the signs on this day.
The 2013 Winners of the event was Steve "sandbagger, i win all the net
events" Socci, and tournament tough Joe Jett. The duo played steady. Joe Jett sealed the victory with a clutch par on
18 for net birdie to take the victory by 1 stroke. In a post round interview, Jett said that he isn't a scoreboard watcher
because usually when he knows how other teams are doing, his captains game goes in the tank, but he glanced at the big board
coming up 18 and knew he needed the par for the win. Jett stated that not many members had tournament savy games like he does.
The one stroke win was over John Woodman and Cioffi, who played great.Cioffi made 4 pars, and used his strokes wisely. The
15th hole was pivotal as Woodman recorded a net 6 and Cioffi made a 6 for net 4. Mike Pszczola (75) and Vin DiCrescento
(79) captured the front (-6). Steve Schwab Jr, who recorded the days best score of 73, teamed with Fred DiCrescento, who along
with Cioffi/Woodman, Jim Fareri Jr/John Falcone Jr., and Socci/Jett won the back at (-6) - See weekly results for full Standings.
A Special Thanks to Ginger and staff on running the BBQ for the event that is so special to us.
Money Notes:
27 out 55 cashed (201 for 395 on year) - Good Game
SPINELLI picks up pin on 10, team
ties the front!
This past week 18 members made way to Pennsylvania to play Architects. This writer got the
pleasure of playing with Joe Jett, who on every hole was explaining what was going on in A.W Tillinghasts mind when designing
the golf course. Once again a special thanks to Jim Fareri Sr. who proclaimed that we would be rained out. The sun shined
and the course was perfect. Chris Panza fired low round of 73. A nice round posted by Jim Fareri Jr., who shot 74 with 5 birdies.
Mike SPINELLI shot 78 for net 65 and picked up a $9 skins closest to the pin on hole 10. He missed the putt! Too Bad! Timothy
Bero also played well shooting net 66.
The game was 3 man teams - 1 Gross/1 Net, and it was Panza, Bobby Wangenstein,
and Bero winning 1/2 the front (-5) with Player X, SPINELLI, and Robert Palmer. The Panza threesome also won the back(-5)
and overall (-10)
Closest to the Pins: Lets explain how this works! - Each week we play closest to pins on all par 3's
, and 1 par 4 on each side for skins, unless otherwise specified.
#1- Index cards are given to the 1st group each week.
- they have the hole # on each card
#2- The 1st group places the card on each of the selected holes, regardless if they
hit the green or not
#3- The players then hit the green and decide who is closest, recording their name on the index
card (and if moved or removed - placed back)
#4- try not to place the card in front of the hole -- place behind the hole
if necessary
#5- The last group retrieves the index card and hands into the committee.
** now -- if no card or names
are handed in, or a wrong name is handed in, or the committe has to guess the winner, there could be $10 worth of problems.
Shall we discontinue this portion of the game? This writer will vote YES because the members of 2013 can't seem to grasp the
pin concept.
In the Money: 9/18 and now 210 for 413 - please note that some weeks The Closest to the Pin prize is awarded
to the wrong person - see above!
This week is the Staten Island Classic so the club will head to Silver Lake. Next week
is the Club Championship Round 1 at Shawnee. Please let us know if you are playing. Yes- click on Tournament and Away Rounds,
If your name is not on the list but intend on playing let us know. If you intend on playing Black Bear that Friday, please
let Falcon know.
